Stressed by life? Love to relax some? Body in dire need of some time out?

You sound like you need to take some time out for yourself and R-E-L-A-X. Everyone benefits from spending some time shutting out the world and focussing on their own self. So what? Be selfish for a while! You deserve to have some "ME" time. It's only healthy.

A simple, but often forgotten luxury is a bath. For those of you who don't have one then you've lucked out - unless you can hire a hotel or borrow a friends.

My relaxation suggestion for the day is to do something different and try a milk bath. Cleopatra is remembered for bathing in milk, and that was why she was so renown for her wonderful, youthful skin. For the majority of you that have never had the pleasure, a milk bath is just sooo relaxing - something decadent that can be done on the cheap.

Milk baths benefit the skin immensely. Milk is a natural exfoliator. It nourishes and moisturises the skin. The active property that makes a milk bath feel so delightful is the fact that milk contains lactic acid - the source of alpha hydroxy acids.

Alpha hydroxies are gentler acids which gently cleanse the skin. Milk properties also contain Beta-Hydroxy acids, which help to exfoliate the skin. Alpha hydroxy acids break down the matter that binds dead skin cells together, thus making your skin feel smoother and softer.

A quick Note Of Caution while I'm at it -- don't try this at home if you are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk. For obvious reasons. Else this luxury bath could be your last...

RECIPES

Basic Milk Bath

Add 2-4 Cups Milk to running bathwater.
Use fresh liquid milk, long-life UHT milk, powdered milk or buttermilk.
*Full cream milk is best as its the fat that has the proteins and properties.

The ideal is a lukewarm temperature, not too hot.
With a bathing time duration of 10 to 20 minutes.

You can add any combination of other ingredients. Some suggestions would be: honey, oatmeal, essential oils, epsom or sea salts and even bicarbonate soda (also known as baking soda). See below for quantities.

VARIATIONS

Other Variations
  • Milk and Honey Bath Add half a cup of honey to every 2 cups of milk to your bathwater.
Honey softens the skin. Manuka honey is the best option due to its amazing healing an antiseptic properties, albeit the most expensive.
  • Creamy Oatmeal Bath: for premium exfoliation add 1 cup oatmeal to every 3 cups of milk. It will also thicken the bath. Oatmeal is also good for dry skin types.
  • Essential Oils *: 10-15 drops to a bath is adequate. Different essential oils have different properties. Lavender is relaxing, Rose Oil is calming, Citrus will awaken your senses. Use 100% pure essential oils (the kind you buy from health shops) not cheap, synthetic mixes.
  • Bicarb Soda: add a small handful to the bath to get extra soft skin.
  • Epsom Salts**: such a refreshing, beneficial ingredient. You can rub a handful of crystals over wet skin to exfoliate. 1-2 cups of Epsom salts added to your bath (with or without milk) helps to greatly reduce stress, relieve menstrual cramps, soothes sore joints and eliminate toxins amongst other things. These salts are rich in sulfate & magnesium - and being more readily absorbed through the skin than via the stomach (such as with tablets) can help balance those deficient in either mineral.
  • Sea Salt***: adding a decent amount of sea salt helps to detoxify the skin and makes it feel softer. It helps draw toxins to the surface and rejuvenates the skin. It also fosters a healthy mineral transfer.
  • Flower Petals: Lavender crushed releases natural scent. Rose petals add some luxe and a sweet fragrance.
* The essential oils can irritate the skin, so don't overdo it!
** Magnesium deficiency contributes to things like higher rates of heart disease, chronic fatigue, joint paint, osteoporosis digestive issues and other stress related illness. Sulfates are very important in the formation of brain tissue and proteins in the joints and digestive walls. They are believed to help detox the body. NOT RECOMMENDED for those with diabetes, high blood pressure/heart problems
*** Hippocrates discovered the benefits of sea salt when he noted that healing that occurred in the fishermen with hand injuries.

A good idea is to loofah whilst you are in the bath to help promote exfoliation and skin renewal. You might like to jump in the shower to rinse off after the bath.

CLEANING IT UP

Drain the bath with a sink strainer if you add oatmeal and petals. And to avoid getting a "milk ring" around the bathtub, make sure you clean it properly. Give it a good wipe down with a cloth or cleaner to avoid any chance of residue.

Ok, so its a little late. But as they say, better late than never...

So. What does 2009 have in store for us this year?
Well, for starters America has a new president. That in itself heralds a new change. He might not be as foolish or funny as George Bush. But what the hey. (I will miss those Bush-ism though)...

Given the way the current climate has rained on our financial parade, there will possibly be more turmoil on the economic front. Perhaps however, this will push the world to find more creative and less hedonistic ways of living.

How does this affect us locally? How will this affect globalisation? Food crops, starvation and poverty are on the rise. Even in the developed Western world.

What about war and genocide? from Afghanistan, Middle East, India and Pakistan, and now Gaza, flaring up again ... will ever end? Is peace really attainable? Theoretically, yes, anything is attainable. Realistically, however, that all depends. The sad part is that some of these countries that have been fighting for over 60 years, so why the hell would they suddenly stop now?

This could go either way. It could get better or it could get worse. I guess it all depends on the minds of those involved, politics and how those in power tiptoe around it, and the willingness to want to see those changes.

And how about environmental change? Perhaps all the financial hoo-ha will prompt us to get a little bit more "back to basics" in our style of living, shall we say. Now I'm not talking Fred Flintstone cars, nor people riding bikes to generate enough electricity for us to power our Internet... no.

I'm talking about positive environmental change. Greener ways of living. A way of life that has less impact on the world around us. No matter what your views on the environment, and whether or not you believe there is such a thing as the "greenhouse effect" is absolutely irrelevant.

No matter where you stand on the issue, you'd be ignorant to think that the Western way of life has no impact on our environment at all. We are creatures of commodity, selfishly craving "more, more, more" - as the rate at which we crave things increases exponentially, and we mine our natural resources until they deplete, how can one think that is environmentally healthy?

======================

Generally during times of distress and upheaval, the sense of optimism in the world prevails. Perhaps the world will learn form its lessons of the recent past and head off anything too devastating. That isn't to say that times won't be hard, or that money won't be tight, but with a little creative adjustment, i think that we could come out the other side better than initially expected.

Call me a positive thinker or an optimist. I will tell you that i am a realist too. But i do believe that the power of positive thought is far more productive. As goes the saying:
You are what you think.

It is true that positive thoughts are far more healthier than negative ones. A positive outlook is more conducive to success, growth and expansion. Positive people are generally more confident and anticipate good outcomes, therefore chasing and attracting more positive things.

Negative attitudes breed fear, insecurity and low-esteem. Thus negative people hold back and attract less than they could or miss out on opportunities through their inaction / fear.

My aims for 2009 are to achieve happiness, success & reward in all areas of life by living creatively and doing what makes me happy. Excelling at it and exceeding my own expectations. yada, yada, yada.

So in 2009. What you expect? What do you fear? What do you hope for? And above all, what will YOU achieve?

What Died in Here?
Check out this Landlord's Trashed House...

And apparently there’s a rental crisis in the city I live in. For a crisis of the different kind, just look at the destruction left behind for this landlord at his rental property in Houston, Texas.

My, my…. How anyone could survive living in that filth is anyone’s guess. The short of it is that after the resident, who had a months rent outstanding, could not be contacted, they Landlord’s book keeper broke in and found this war zone.

Supposedly there are 2 cats, and the tenant is missing. My guess is that they’re all dead beneath the heap of shite that litters this place. Read the full story and see more imagery here: www.buymydump.com (preferably not whilst eating)…
